50 State Quarters
In 1999, the U.S. Mint started producing 50 new quarters to commemorate the 50 states.
Washington's portrait on the obverse was redesigned and the date was moved to the reverse.
Each state then had its own unique design put on the reverse of their coin.
They were minted and released into circulation in the order that each state joined the union
at a rate of 5 coins per year for 10 years.
